Judy, Amanda and Charlie

The training video is of Charlie, a German Shepherd Dog mix, who is a year old and is fearful of strangers. To help Charlie accept strangers I used Desensitization and Counter-Conditioning training using food rewards. In the video, Charlie seems very accepting of the strange man walking past him on the street, but it didn't start out this way. To use this protocol, start out by walking about 20 feet away from the dog in a horizontal line (Desensitization) and decrease the distance (vertical line) as the dog remains calm. Each time the dog remains calm during this exercise, treat the dog with a high value treat (for ex, hot dogs, peanut butter) (Counter-Conditioning). Pretty soon the dog will equate the food (something good) with the stranger, and will no longer fear strange people. I hope you enjoy the video and stay tuned for more in the coming weeks!

Rocky, the Rottweiler and his family

My client's dog, an 11 month old Rottweiler, Rocky, pulled on the leash and was difficult to walk. After 2 weeks of loose leash training with the Gentle Leader Head collar, my client can now walk Rocky without pulling and with hardly holding the leash at all. Even his 4 year old son can walk Rocky! You might need to desensitize your dog to wearing the collar as some dogs tend to paw at it in the beginning. Once your dog gets used to it, you won't use anything else. The Gentle Leader works miracles!
